Nuclear Winter

Well, it's finally happened: Game Update #2 is live! And for those of you who read Interview News last week and wonder where that issue stands, Julie "Ellyra" Burness has been working with me on the interview. She wanted to make sure I still wanted the questions answered (which I do), and we are moving forward as best we can. But until that bomb drops, I want to talk about the one that just landed on our hard drives. Game Update #2 (GU#2) is a big deal, so let's dish!

Usually, each major patch comes with announcements that the world will end (or already has). For sure,  GU#2 did not arrive without glitches.  Theonlydude had problems downloading the patch and getting it to run, and he wasn't the only dude with that problem. And then of course there was a new problem created by the patch. Even saying all of that, which is pretty normal with any game update--not to mention one so huge--GU#2 is looking pretty good from where I sit.

Ten Ton Hammer's own Dalmarus got to play before I did. He reported an increase in performance, which I later was able to reproduce on my own machine--though not as big of an increase. Dalmarus also reported a more populous server on Florendyl, a claim Zedar supported based on experiences on Shidreth.

Any update that can simultaneously increase performance and bring back old customers can only be good news for Sony Online Entertainment. If those former customers return to find performance enhanced and then spread the word, Vanguard could get a little life back--and that would make me very happy.

So, I am left to ask, "Where is the fallout?" Where is the nuclear winter?" No, I'm not blind to the real problems (and imagined--GU#2 did not give your hamster cancer, lemey2124) on the SOE Vanguard forums. I'm just saying that GU#2 is a welcomed improvement based on my limited playing experience with it so far (less than 12 hours).

What's your experience with Game Update #2? I know it's not perfect and that my favorite MMOG needs a lot more work still, but GU#2 is the first thing that has made me feel hopeful about Vanguard in nearly 6 weeks. I Told You So.
